Week 7 Reading Notes: Nigerian Folk Tales Part B

I am still going to continue with the thought process type notes that I took for Part A.

Another origin of something

The first story is about the origin of thunder and lightning and why they now live in the sky as they used to live on the ground. I like the relationship that is built between thunder and lightning in this story as a mother and ill tempered son.

Why the moon waxes and wanes... is this a question? Also this story doesn't explain why the moon still gets skinny in the sky if the old woman isn't cutting fat off her anymore? And, who is the random little girl? Not enough detail, I could possibly answer some of those questions and fill in the gaps for my story.

If water tortoises have more food, why don't all of them just move to the water and live with the hippo. Also, wouldn't someone have noticed he tied to rope to the tree when the hippo was trying to pull him into the water?

I am not really familiar with this type of bird but the picture and color description was helpful at the end of the story. It is smart to clarify something like that for the readers.

Very interesting story about the hawk and its food. For some reason I felt like I was rooting for the hawk, even though he was sort of the villain in this story as most hawks are in discovery documentaries. I wonder if I could find a way to write a story where the reader was rooting for the villain?

Disputes

The dispute between the bush cow and elephant is decided by the chief to be settled in a fight. This story gives a lot of personality to the animals involved which I liked. The monkey part was my favorite!

The brother's dispute, caused by someone who they thought was their friend. This turned into a full battle between the brother's towns. The two faced friend gets killed after it's determined that he caused the fight which seems so harsh but who knows. The cock dies too which is sad cause it wasn't his fault.

A dispute and also an origin story of why hippos reside in water. This one felt abrupt and a little incomplete. I found myself getting confused due to lack of details.

Interesting dispute/origin story of why people are buried. The ending says dogs are not trusted as messengers because of that story but I would definitely trust a dog messenger more than a human! Maybe I could rewrite this and flip the characters so that a human is the one that brings the message and then is mistrusted. Maybe a girl could've told the message first then a boy, and this is why boys can't be trusted? No shade, just brainstorming.

Wow fight between jealous wife and what the story describes as fat wife, made of oil. Jealous wife sucks but her fate kind of seems unfair like her own parents sold her as a slave? That is so mean. Also, pretty cool that the fat wife grew back from just her big toe... that is cool.

Two bird friends of different breeds competed to show the king they could starve for seven days. The small bird was smart and found a way to sneak food, so he won and his friend died. Poor friend.

Another king of the birds story? Really? These authors were really into birds and hippos. The king said all birds must come fight to compete and this is starting to sound like a nightmare..... too many birds. Maybe I could write a bird movie spin off? The fishing eagle was simply wiser.
